Truckee Auto Repair

This past summer we had a family friends , mother and son , here from out of the country. The son was headed to University of Nevada Reno to stay for a Summer program. We left our home off hwy 50 more than 3 hours away for a quiet beautiful ride to Reno. Planning to stop for late lunch along the way and continuing to reassure a mom who was returning to their home country alone, her 19 yr son will be in safe hands and we are not far away. Over 90 minutes into the trip and More than 100 miles from home, the car overheated. We managed to make it off the freeway and found a local repair shop , The Auto Doctor. As the stress as to what could be wrong was the added stress of making sure we are able to get to the university by 5 pm to check in. In addition, trying to make sure our guest were calm as well. It was 1 pm plenty of time I told myself. Having enough knowledge to know what the simplest fix is to worst case scenario. It was determined a simple fix, radiator cap. Now , the car we were in was my husband baby, it had given us very few problems as he babies it and make sure it has it's regular visits to dealership for oil and fluid changes and of course washes. To date , we had very few issues with vehicle but what ones we had experienced, always seemed to require to have the part special ordered. It was no surprise The Auto Doctor didn't have the part on hand and had to look around. We went to lunch while the search for the part began and the radiator cap could be located. I had already started calling looking for a rental vehicle but had not been getting any calls back. About and hour or so later we received a call the part was found in Reno. I was trying to remain calm for our guest but inside was frustrated. All I could see was dollars signs in my head and now I had no part, no car ,no return call from any rental agencies nearby and the clock was ticking. The owner took my husband and I back to the vehicle and explained options. We could pay over $100 to get part here with no guarantee it would arrive in time to get back on road to get to the university by 5 pm. I explained my frustrations ,the fact I had yet to hear from any rental places and fear we were not going to make it in time to the university. The owner calmly shared, hey I know a few of local rental places let me call them. If we don't hear back in a few minutes, you can take my personal car and drive to Reno to make it by 5 pm. I was floored. This just wasn't something you hear everyday. Someone offering serious help to a complete stranger. Loaning his personal car so we could make it to University of Reno before the office closes. With in a few minutes a rental vehicle was out front and we we ready to go with no time to spare. We arrived at the university at 4:30 and spent the next 20 minutes trying to locate the correct office. We got there at 4:55pm. As we shared our adventure with the gals in the office, the all stated , "oh yeah you must be talking about The Auto Doctor. They are super people over there. The owner is a personal friend and that sounds just like him." We picked the car up a few days later. The price seemed more than fair. The customer service...... Well that is something I find difficult finding the proper words to share. It was service I can remember my parents and grand parents talking about getting similar service from the local business in the towns they grew up in and visited many many years ago. Just got my tires changed and oil change , jason is very helpful and this place is awesome!

I was very impressed when I stopped by to have what I thought was a slow leak in my tire fixed. When the wait time was a little long, they actually suggested that I might want to see if their nearest competitor could help me sooner. I opted to wait in their comfy waiting area and had a nice conversation with another customer while I waited. It turns out that I didn't have a slow leak, but a faulty tire pressure gauge......I felt a little foolish when I realized the tires were fine but ALL had pressure that was too low. They kindly made sure each tire was pressurized just right and sent me on my way without even charging me. Wow! What a nice surprise.

We found a nail in the tire of our RV. We were less then a mile from here and we waited less then an hour for them to help us. We ended up not needing to replace anything and they didn't even charge us! Thank you for saving our day, on our way to vacation!

Rip off way over charge for services. If your traveling from out of town be prepared to pay some bucks!

Shout out to Don and his tech! We were leaving Truckee to head home to Sacramento and we get two nails in one tire. They put on the spare AND replaced a dead tail light for no charge(I did tip)! So thankful to these guys for quickly get us back on the road!!!!

Note, from the Bay Area so don't know the area well. Visited this shop on a referral from Enterprise after getting a tire puncture going back to King's Beach from Reno. Spoke to Jason on the phone, straight forward and understanding. Got my tire patched in around 30 mins so I could head back to San Jose to drop off the car in time. Waiting room is nice, pretty cool if you're a car guy, they got a boxer 6 in the waiting room, and father spring and strut bar stools. As I was waiting overheard them helping dozen of customers and being overly technical when necessary and over simplified when needed. They were very curious to me and everyone they helped. Would definitely come back if I lived here. $20 for a patch is high but the rush and the customer service is worth it. Also, they have a shop dog, kinda puts them in another league.

We were on a RV trip to Truckee while in Colfax the engine stalled while going up the hill. We lost power. We pulled over and my husband figured it may be a clogged fuel filter. We were pulling a 40' toy hauler with a Harley inside!!! But after talking to our mechanic and several diesel mechanics, they all said the same thing...clogged fuel filter. Well, we took it here to this shop and they looked at it. At the time we took it in, the truck ran OK w/o RV hooked up. But they looked at it and called us and said maybe fuel pump. We never mentioned fuel pump, so my husband called his mechanic again and said NO...probably not that. My concern is it cost $130 for a diagnostic test and we told them what it was!!! They really didn't need do a diagnostic. But oh well! Then when we said only change fuel filter and NO to the fuel pump, we got our truck back. We feel as though because we were not from the area they "tried" to sell us something we didn't need. And then $288 later we were done. Another thing, they weren't that friendly to "out of towners". A few locals came in and they chatted away. One day we sat for 20 min before anyone asked us what we needed. It's just not cool to over charge and try and sell people things they don't need for their car. Shady! We do not recommend this place for repairs!

The Auto Doctor is an incredible place to work! Being on the "other side of the counter" I have learned so much about this industry and how not all repair shops are "out to get you". You just don't stay in business for over 33 years by treating people unfair The Auto Doctor prides itself on taking care of the customer. Things don't always go as planned, like any business but we give it everything we got 100% of the time. Best team in town! Thank you for providing us all with a great place to go to work every day.
